7 Questions to Ask Before Commissioning Your First AI Film

By Komodo X — AI-Native Film Studio6 min read

Most briefs ask which tools a studio uses. That is the one question that does not matter. Here are the seven that decide whether your first AI film works, with the answers a serious partner should give.

Every week another brand commissions its first AI film, and most run the selection process on the wrong axis. Tool access is universal now; every studio you shortlist rents the same frontier models. What separates partners is everything the tools do not do. These are the seven questions we would ask if we were sitting on your side of the table, along with what a credible answer sounds like.

1. Who directs?

Get a name. One human whose taste is accountable for every frame. If the answer is 'our AI workflow' or 'our creative team', the work will look like everyone else's AI workflow. Authorship is not a credit line; it is the mechanism that keeps a thousand generated options from averaging into mush.

2. Show me shot 40

Anyone can show you a stunning first frame. Demo reels are built from cherry-picked frames by definition. Ask instead for a run of consecutive shots from one real project: same character, same wardrobe, same light, scene after scene. Consistency across dozens of shots is the single hardest problem in AI production, and it is the tell that separates a studio with a real pipeline from a prompt operator with a portfolio.

3. What is your earned case?

The most-watched AI advertising of the past year traveled on little or no media spend, carried by audiences because the work shipped fast enough to ride a cultural moment. Ask your candidate partner what they have shipped that people carried voluntarily, and how the craft was built to earn that. A partner who thinks about distribution while making the film is worth more than one who hands you a file and wishes you luck.

4. How fast, honestly?

The credible answer for a serious brand film is days to a couple of weeks, with review loops included. Distrust both extremes. Anyone promising overnight has not budgeted the iterations that make the work good. Anyone quoting months is selling you their old process with a new invoice.

5. What is the disclosure plan?

Audiences in 2026 do not punish AI. They punish unclaimed AI. The backlash cases of the past year share one shape: the audience discovered the process instead of being told. Decide before launch how you will talk about how the film was made, and who fronts that conversation. If your partner has not raised disclosure unprompted, they have not been paying attention.

6. What happens to my brand canon?

Your characters, products, colours and world need to survive every shot of this film, and then survive into the next one. Ask how references are locked, stored and reused. Ask who owns them. A serious partner treats your brand as canon to be enforced, not context to be re-prompted. You are buying a canon, not a clip.

7. What will you not use AI for?

The most important answer on the list. A partner with a real no list, faces they will not fake, moments they insist on shooting practically, projects they decline, is showing you their taste. A partner with no no list will make whatever the model produces and call it a style. Taste is what you are actually hiring, and refusal is the only place taste is visible before the work exists.

The pattern behind all seven

Notice that none of these questions mention tools. That is deliberate. The model layer is becoming a utility; direction, consistency, honesty about process and taste are not. Every serious partner can answer all seven without flinching. We answer them before clients ask.

Taste is what you are actually hiring, and refusal is the only place taste is visible before the work exists.
